The Sutherland & Kovach Story

We are Hannah Sutherland and Jasmine Kovach and we work together in a beautiful sweet world.

To give you a sense of history, we’ve known each other since we were gawky pre-teens. But our story really began when we ended up at the same high school. We immediately bonded during art class and have been best friends ever since.

Hannah has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam and Jasmine has a Master of Arts in History, also from the University of Auckland. Qualifications aside, the best way to describe us is simply ‘artists’. We are observers. We see the world through the lens of our cameras; capturing the beauty that is to be found in so many of life’s everyday moments when you know where to look.

Sutherland Kovach Studio is two photographers with one vision. A little like the way twins share a kooky silent communication, when we photograph together we click (no pun intended). Our individual photographic styles complement each other; the images weaving together seamlessly to become a fluid story – your story.

We take care to reflect the individual style of our client’s occasions and offer a bespoke photographic service that delivers sophisticated images with an artistic edge. Our creative ideas and ability to spot the intrinsic charm of finer details is what makes our clients happy, but our shared passions go beyond the camera. Our knack for craft and event styling has led us to be selected to provide editorial shoots for New Zealand’s leading wedding magazine and is something that we can bring to your occasion if you desire.

Love has inspired many an artist through history and it inspires us in every day of our work, which we think makes us the luckiest people in the world.

Tying the Knot in Te Kuiti – Matt and Mialy’s Gorgeous Farm Wedding

We shot this beautiful wedding in March on a gorgeous summery day. What could be prettier than the view from Matt’s parents’ farm in Te Kuiti?

People flew from all corners of the world for Matt and Mialy’s wedding, including the bride and groom themselves who make their home in the US of A. Mialy’s family came all the way from Madagascar where she was born and raised. Matt is one of nine siblings so it was also very special for them to be reunited again.

As we drove away from the laughter and merriment we couldn’t help but feel a sense of wistful nostalgia for all those heart-warming family times. A strong urge came over us to build a campfire and roast marshmallows but the road to the next adventure had to be driven, so we put on the country folk tunes and warbled our way to the next destination.

{MAG}rouge – online wedding magazine launch (and our dream come true)

Last week a long time dream of ours came true. On December 6th we pressed the go live button on {MAG}rouge – an online wedding magazine that we hope spreads joy and beauty worldwide. Not only are we absolutely thrilled to have such a fab excuse to execute and produce so many beautiful shoots, we also get to showcase the work of talented artists we have long admired or newly adored.

A week on, the overwhelming support and enthusiasm for this project has been incredible and we are buzzing with fresh inspiration for Issue 02. When we first bandied the idea of {MAG} rouge around with Kate from Ruby and Willow Design and Judit from Artisan Cakes, we had yet to realise just how much enjoyment we would get from spending so many creative hours with these talented and stylish ladies. Looking back we also had little idea that some of our most glamourous dreams would actually materialise. Like the one where we laughed about having a glorious cake emblazoned with our first issue cover on it, at a huge party with loads of friends, family and respected colleagues…. dreams really do come true and sometimes they are even sweeter than you ever dared imagine!
