A few years ago my brother told me about his friend who was interviewing at a prestigious American pop culture institution. Upon meeting with the person who would employ him, he was asked ‘What’s your passion?’ I’ve thought about that question many times since because it seems so important to me. It’s meant to translate into English as ‘Who is Alain Germain when he’s at home?’ When I first started speaking French, I tried to translate all my colloquialisms and soon found that, although it was possible, there was something lost in the translation.
